Several Folders of backups (historical) already exist - can I "back them up" as versions?

Hello,

I am searching for products that perform File backups into folders on an existing server/server from desktops.

I have discussed redirected profiles with the company owner but he would prefer another method.

I already have several  Named foldere with multiple copies of essentially the same directories from that user's PC extant on the server.

If I were to implement Syncirfy,  could I somehow add these existing "backups" as File deltas as per "Automatically maintain multiple versions of a backed up file on the server. Previous versions are stored as file-deltas reducing"
- Recall these multiple folders are already ON the server, they would not be submitted from the workstation (without some trickery).

Ben,

I am not 100% sure if I understand your question. Therefore, please correct me if my answer below does not make sense.

Syncrify is a file synchronization tool, which obviously can be used for backup. In other words, files on the detination are identical to source. Therefore, if you goal is to synchronize a few folders off of your desktop to your server Syncrify will definitely work. It will skip the files that already match and will only copy files that are either missing or have been modified.

If it helps, we can do a demo and you can ask questions to ensure it will work for you. Please contact us via email (sales@synametrics.com) if you're interested in a demo.

ok...perhaps I can be more specific.

I have several folders on my server.  I will NAME them below.  The names should clear things up.

I want to consoldidate all of the folders into one "backup" syncronized folder - perhaps using Syncrify.
When Syncrify applies VERSIONING - it does not keep FULL copies of each version of a file - but only Deltas (Differences between the versions)

BEFORE:

PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2020-10-15
PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2020-09-15
PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2020-08-15
PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2019-12-15

AFTER

SYNCRIFY-BACKUP-Merged-With-Deltas- All backups combined for PC - All-prior-folders

A couple of follow up question:

  • Does same file exist in both PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2020-10-15 and PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2020-09-15 folder?
  • Does PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2020-10-15 folder contain the latest version of every file? If yes, why not just copy the contents of that folder to the "All combinded" folder?

There is no direct way of combining the contents of multiple folders into one folder. However, you could use the following work-around:

  • When you use Two-Sync in Syncrify, it will look at the last modified date of a file to determine it's direction. For example, if the Client has a new copy than the server, the direction will be Client-To-Server. Similarly, if the server has a newer copying, Syncrify will switch the direction to Server-To-Client.
  • Using this logic you can copy the contents of PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2019-12-15 to a temp folder. Let's call that "Combined". It will reside on the PC (not the server).
  • You use Two-Way-Sync for direction and run a backup. Since nothing will be on the destination (Syncrify Server), everything will be copied.
  • Next you delete everything from this temp folder and copy the contents of PC My Documents Copy of Files - 2020-08-15 now to Combined.
  • Running the backup/synchronization again will copy the newer files in both directions.
  • Make sure you remove client-side cache before running every backup. Check https://web.synametrics.com/syncrify-how-to-delete-folder-cache-manually.htm for details.
  • Repeat this process for every folder.
