transfer server procedure

I have a syncrify server which I want to move to another datacenter location. I had the following in mind:

-oldserver in place, change to DR-master role, hostname = http://OLDSERVER:5800 to all clients

-put new server in place as a DR-slave and let syncrify do a full replication. newserver is reachable through http://NEWSERVER:5800

-then change in HTTP configuration the parameter Preferred URL: to http://NEWSERVER:5800

will this approach work, without having to adapt everyclient manually ?

There is one small issue with this approach. Clients cannot run a backup on a SLAVE server. Every client will start running their backup against the SLAVE machine once the preferred URL is updated. These backups will fail if the role is set to SLAVE.

Therefore, try the following work-arounds. In both cases you will have to run the new machine as a MASTER (after a full sync has been done):

  1. Change the IP address in your DNS so it now points to the new MASTER (your new machine).
  2. Leave both MASTERS running and change the URL in the older master so clients now connect to the new machine.

Option 1 is better because it will switch the pointer to the new machine right away.

thanks for the response. If changing DNS records is not an option, due to using an IP-adress, how long will it take for the adoption of the use preferred URL ?
