smpt server

I have configured the syncrify server to connect via smtp.gmail.com per the instuctions on the synametrics website, but cannot send email from syncrify. The parameters I am using are:

smtp server: smtp.gmail.com

smtp server port: 587

smtp user: <my id>@gmail.com

smtp password: <my password>

secure connection: TLS

The error I get when testing the connection is:

Error: unable to connect to remote smtp server. null

I'm running the server on Debian Linux.

Any experience with this?

Try the following:

  • Open an SSH session on your Debian machine
  • Type the following command:

    telnet smtp.gmail.com 587

  • You should connect to Google's SMTP server. If you get a connection error, that indicates some network problem.

Sorry for ressurecting old thread but I am running into the exact same issue.  I am receiving the same error message when attemping to send a test message.  This is on a debian based raspberry pi 3.

running the command:

telnet smtp.gmail.com 587

and I get:

Trying 172.217.212.108...
Connected to smtp.gmail.com.

Thanks,

Matt

You should see the SMTP banner from the other end. For example, when running the same command from my end I see:

220 smtp.gmail.com ESMTP x49sm6127966qtx.6 - gsmtp

If you don't see the banner, that means some other server/firewall is intercepting the connection.

Apologies, I should have posted the full results.  Here is the output when I enter telnet smtp.gmail.com 587 :

Trying 172.217.212.108...

The line started with 220 smtp.gmail.com... confirms you are connected to their server.

Note that Gmail and Outlook.com (Microsoft) have many restrictions on who can send emails through their servers to prevent misuse. These rules often create hurdles for legitimate users. As far as I know, you have to create special "App" passwords before Gmail or Microsoft will accept emails. Please search "App password gmail" on Google for help.
