better/full CPU usage on client machine

Hi,

just did a test backup of my 500MB PST file (local size 550MB, server size 518 MB). It took 1 or 2 minutes for the server to 'respond' but then 15 minutes (on an intel i7!, Win7 x64) to 'match blocks'. During all these 15 minutes CPU load was only 20-30 (max!!) %.

Couldn't you /use/ the CPU power a client machine got? If I was unhappy about a CPU hog I still could lower its priority.

Thank you, Frank

Frank,

The number of CPU usage is directly proportional to amount of data that is different between the two ends. I assume the files were not that different in your case. Doing a block match on files that are very different from each other will use more CPU.

Having said that, the disk is many folds slower than the CPU and the block matching process is more I/O bound than CPU. Therefore, the overall time is not reduced by adding multiple threads, which can use more CPU but makes the disk head work harder.

Imran.

Well, Imran,

unfortunately tht is not true in case of my test scenario:
A file test.avi of 85.2 MB (89'386'977 bytes) is on my local SSD and only partially transferred 30.0 MB (31'457'280 bytes) on server.

Running Syncrify Client 696 on my i7 shows an almost idle disk (using Process Explorer or ProcMon, both from live.sysinternals.com --> javaw.exe reading 120.000 - 13.000 Bytes/s), javaw.exe taking constantly around 20% CPU. I also verified with another disk.
So neither the disk nor the CPU are the bottlenecks.
BTW: My impression is that performance for media files (avi, mp4) is much worse than others in that matter.

...just verified:
My *.PST is read (in identical environment) with 10.000.000 - 30.000.000 Bytes/s, a *.wmv or *.mp4 with 120.000-130.000 Bytes/s ("I/O Delta Read" column in Process Explorer).
"Integrated Client" 3.3.696
