Oracle connection

Hello, I installed the Oracle client on my Windows 7 machine. Using the "test connection" via ODBC gets me a connection success. Trying to connect via Win SQL gives an error message that "SQL Error State:08004, Native Error Code. 2F7A, ODBC Error: [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA 12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified". I am using the 32 bit ODBC Manager from within WinSQL and it works as well as the ODBC manager in windows 7 (odbcad32.exe). I have another machine side by side running WinSQL that is a Windows NT machine and works fine with the exact same TNSNames.ora file. Any ideas would be appreciated. On the same Windows 7 machine to a Sybase IQ12 database I can work with no problems. Feel free to contact me with any questions if I can help or provide more information. Thanks, Richard

Hi, Are you using WinSQL Lite or Professional? If Professional, try using the WinSQL Oracle Wire Protocol Driver. This driver does not need TNSNames.ora file and works better. If you are using Lite, try putting the location of TNSNames.ora file in your machine path. Imran. >Hello, > >I installed the Oracle client on my Windows 7 machine. Thank you for your reply. I am using WinSQL Lite for now. The TNSNames.ora file is the easiest way to set up the connection since there are a lot of other applications I use beyond just WinSQL. Having and using the same connection and connection strings makes things much easier to troubleshoot. For example I use Crystal Reports, Business Objects, and MS Access applications with embedded strings which reference the DSN. I am currently running two computers. One using Windows NT and a new one using Windows 7 64 bit. On the Windows NT machine I have never had a problem with WinSQL. The Windows 7 machine works fine for Sybase IQ 12 connections but seems to have issues with the Oracle connection, even when the DSN "test connection" passes the test and connects. Looking at the two machines side by side the new one is running a trial version 9.0.107.624 and the old one is running 7.5.88.602. I will probably try installing the older version on the new machine and see if it works better with the Oracle connection. Are you using the same DSN with Crystal Reports and WinSQL? If yes, WinSQL should work fine. Question: Are you using 32bit version of the driver or 64bit? Make sure you are using the 32bit version with WinSQL. Brian >Thank you for your reply. I am using WinSQL Lite for now.
