Backup slowly

Hi, I'm trying to back up some files, about 5Gb, but it's very slow. The folder contains 33000 files for about 5Gb and it takes about 50min. If I save a single file of 5Gb size it implies about 8min. Can anyone give me an explanation?

Backup slowly

Francesco,

There are a couple reasons:

  • When using Syncrify, the first backup is usually slow. It's the subsequent backups that are faster. This is why we recommend seeding the backup for large datasets. Check http://web.synametrics.com/SyncrifySeeding.htm for details
  • You cannot compare copying 1 big 5GB file with 33,000 files adding up to 5GB. Besides the file, Syncrify has to copy the metadata for these files, which obviously is going to be 33,000 more than just one file. In fact, try copying a file using regular Windows copy/paste method. You will see a huge difference when copying 1 5GB file vs 33,000 files adding up to 5GB

Once the first backup is synchronized, you will see the benefits of just copying the deltas to the server. If these 33,000 files are stored in hundreds of folders, enable Folder Cache. Check http://web.synametrics.com/syncrifyfoldercache.htm for details
