WinSQL 10 (Trial) - Select All Not Working

After running a query on WinSQL version 10.0.154.694, I cannot use CTRL+A for "Select All" on the query results.  The "Select All" from the "Edit" menu also does not work.

Luckily, the "Open in MS Excel" feature does work, so I am using that as a workaround for the time being.

Please let me know if there is a better workaround or if I can offer help in resolving.

Thanks,

Adam

WinSQL 10 (Trial) - Select All Not Working

Adam,

I assume your end goal is to copy the contents of the entire grid to clipboard. If this assumption is true, a better approach is to:

  • Right click on the grid
  • Select Copy Entire Grid under the Extended Copy option.

Note that the Select All option has been disabled by design. The grid in WinSQL is virtual - meaning the actual data is stored in a TEMP file and it brings just enough cells into memory that are visible. This allow WinSQL to fetch millions of rows without running out of memory. Selecting every cell in a small dataset is no problem. However, if you try selecting every cell in a grid containing a large dataset, not only it takes a long time but has a potential of running our of memory. This is the reason why Select All is disabled in v10.

Imran.

WinSQL 10 (Trial) - Select All Not Working

Thanks for the information Imran.  Is there a shortcut key for "Extended Copy>Copy entire grid" that I can use in place of CTRL+A that I'm used to using from V9?

Unfortunately, there is no shortcut (yet). However, this is a good feature to have and we will add one in a future release.

Thanks, I look forward to see what you come up with, I'm sure you have plenty on your plate for improvements and features.

As a side note, I noticed that there is some studder/lag time when using CTRL+SHIFT+END on the grid.  This is the shortcut to highlight everything from your current position to the last cell on the bottom right.  I think this is probably from the same scenario you mentioned above, but wanted to bring it to your attention in case it isn't something that is only occuring on my end.

Thanks,

Adam
